Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley said Wednesday he was "leaning" toward supporting Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and predicted a September confirmation hearing.
"I'm very much leaning 'yes,'" the Iowa Republican told KCRG-TV in Cedar Rapids.
"I don't expect there's going to be anything negative [that comes out] that would cause me to change my mind, but that's why we have a hearing.
"I think what helps me the most is 12 years that he's been on the D.C. Circuit, writing 307 opinions, all his law review articles, his teaching at universities.
"Those sort of things."
Earlier this month, President Donald Trump nominated Kavanaugh, 53, a federal appellate court judge in Washington, to replace the retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy.
Senate Democrats are demanding Kavanaugh's writings from his years as staff secretary to President George W. Bush be released.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York alleged on Twitter that Republicans were "hiding" Kavanaugh's record "from the Senate and the American people."
Grassley, whose committee holds Kavanaugh's confirmation hearing, told KCRG "we're going to give them all relevant information that they need."
