Senate Judiciary Committee Chuck Grassley said Tuesday that GOP leadership should be ready to call off Easter recess in order to get Neil Gorsuch confirmed to the Supreme Court, Politico reports.
Gorsuch was unveiled on Tuesday night as President Trump's pick to replace the deceased Justice Antonin Scalia on the high court.
"I can't speak for Senator McConnell, but he told you the way it should be set," Grassley said of McConnell's previous comments on how he hoped to have Gorsuch confirmed before Easter. "And he ought to be prepared to cancel the Easter recess if it can't be done by then."
Easter recess is scheduled for the weeks of April 10 and April 17. Grassley, who chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee that vets judicial nominees, said the process to get Gorsuch properly vetted and all his opinions researched would take about 30 to 45 days. Then, the Supreme Court nomination hearings would take place soon after, around mid-March.
"It'll follow pretty much what is already practice, maybe over the last 20 years," said the Iowa Republican. "I want anybody that's interested in this that's reading your story that we're going to try to do it of the precedent of previous [nominees] as far as time is concerned."
