Donald Trump Jr.'s correspondence with WikiLeaks via Twitter was harmless, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, told CNN on Tuesday.

"I read those emails. He only responded to two or three of them, and they were very innocuous," Grassley said. "So I don't even know why you'd be asking about him if you read them."

The Atlantic reported Monday someone at WikiLeaks communicated with Trump Jr. on several occasions via direct messages on Twitter between last September and this July, although Trump Jr. stopped responding last October.

WikiLeaks asked Trump Jr. for favors and provided information to him but Trump Jr. did not respond to every message. Trump Jr.'s lawyers gave the Twitter messages to congressional investigators who are looking into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia in any way during the election.

Grassley said he has not decided on whether Trump Jr. would be called in for a public hearing.

"We are not going to be making any decisions on that until [me and California Sen. Dianne Feinstein] discuss it between the two of us," Grassley said.

Feinstein, the top Democrat on the committee, said she wants Trump Jr. to come in as soon as possible.

"I am very hopeful we'll be able to have him before the committee as soon as possible," she said. "In view of everything that's come out — and also, as I understand it, he's willing to come — that it could get scheduled, and hopefully the chairman will do that."
