With the circumstances surrounding Donald Trump Jr.’s pre-election meeting with Russian operatives at Trump Tower taking center stage again, a year-old remark by Sen. Chuck Grassley has emerged that suggests the president’s son is a criminal if he lied to Congress about the powwow.
“Tell Jake Tapper at CNN it’s a crime to lie to Congress whether Trump Jr. is under oath or not,” Grassley (R-Iowa) wrote on Twitter on July 23, 2017, Mediaite reports.
The quote was unearthed amid a battle between the lawyers for President Donald Trump and his former personal attorney Michael Cohen, who CNN reports is willing to say that the commander in chief knew about the meeting in advance during the 2016 election.
According to the cable news network, Cohen's claim would contradict repeated denials by Trump, Trump Jr., their lawyers and other administration officials who have said the president knew nothing about the Trump Tower meeting until he was asked about it by The New York Times in July 2017.
Trump denied knowledge of the meeting in a tweet Friday morning.
