The British spy who compiled a dossier on then presidential candidate Donald Trump met with an FBI contact at least twice in 2016, and during one meeting the FBI agent asked the spy about former Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos.
David Ignatius of The Washington Post reported Wednesday that former MI6 agent Christopher Steele had a trusted contact at the FBI through his intelligence work.
Steele, according to Ignatius, met with his FBI contact around July 4, 2016 in London to share some of what he had found through an intelligence investigation: Russia had been "cultivating, supporting, and assisting Trump for at least five years." That claim was in the dossier Steele put together for opposition research firm Fusion GPS.
In October 2016, Steele and his FBI contact met in Rome. The FBI had already gotten word Papadopoulos had been told by the Russians they had dirt on Trump's Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton.
Steele, according to Ignatius, said he had not heard of Papadopoulos.
Papadopoulos pleaded guilty last summer to lying to the FBI as part of special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation.
