Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., is calling for an investigation by internal watchdogs at three federal departments and the National Archives into how the agencies responded to congressional probes into Hunter Biden, the son of former Vice President Joe Biden.
Murphy made his request in a letter to the inspectors general of the National Archives and departments of State, Treasury and Homeland Security, CBS News reported Wednesday.
He specifically wants to compare how the agencies responded to congressional demands for information during the impeachment inquiry to how they responded to requests about Hunter Biden’s work for the Ukrainian energy company Burisma.
Noting he is “deeply concerned,” Murphy said the agencies “may not be applying a consistent test regarding inquiries made by Congress, choosing to comply with requests that are designed to damage the president's political opponents, but refusing to comply with requests into the activities of the president."
And he added: "I am troubled that President (Donald) Trump may be weaponizing the executive branch in advance of the 2020 elections by directing agencies to comply with congressional investigations designed to hurt his political opponent.”
Murphy asked the inspectors general to reply to his letter by March 23.
Republicans have been investigating Burisma and Hunter Biden for months to try to determine whether his former position on the company's board created a conflict of interest for Joe Biden, who was then vice president.
