The Chinese government has said that it will protect the "legitimate interests" of foreign businesses in China and would lessen the fallout from a trade war between the U.S. and China, Politico reported.
Gao Feng, China’s Ministry of Commerce spokesman, said that targeting U.S.-funded businesses in China to counter U.S. restrictions on Chinese products is not part of Beijing’s plan; instead, China could compensate foreign businesses for losses from such a trade war.
"As for possible impacts on businesses from the trade war initiated by the United States, we will keep assessing the situation and make efforts to help (foreign) businesses to mitigate any possible impacts," Gao said, Politico reported.
China has always been a popular market for foreign investors, Gao said. "It is not only because of China’s large market size, but it is also because the Chinese market is stable, rational and committed to the rule of law,” Gao added, Politico reported.
Gao slammed the U.S.’ tariffs on China. "To put it simply, the U.S. is opening fire on the entire world, including itself," said Gao, Politico reported.
China "will never fire the first shot" in a trade war, the country’s Ministry of Finance said in a statement Wednesday.
