GOP Presidential Candidates Focus on China

By    |   Tuesday, 24 May 2011 02:57 PM EDT

As China grows into a bigger and bigger player on the world scene, the country also is turning into a bigger subject of importance for Republican presidential candidates, Politico reports.

The issue is a natural for Jon Huntsman, the recently departed U.S. ambassador to China. But other candidates are focusing strongly on the country too. Frontrunner Mitt Romney calls China “a great threat to the stability of the world.”

Candidate Tim Pawlenty has said in speeches that “America’s rightful place is not lagging behind China.” And likely candidate Michele Bachmann received a strong response at the Conservative Political Action Conference this year, when she lamented China’s $1.14 trillion of U.S. Treasury holdings.

Even Donald Trump made hay out of China before departing the presidential race, repeatedly saying that the Chinese are ripping us off.
