Cecile Richards, the president of Planned Parenthood, said Democrats must remain supportive of abortion rights, because Republicans are taking aim at them.

"The actions we're seeing and what we've seen out of this administration from day one have had both barrels aimed at women," Richards said in an interview published Tuesday in Politico.

The first six months of President Donald Trump's administration have been "much worse" than she imagined, she said.

Richards reacted to Rep. Ben Ray Lujan, D-N.M., who said earlier in August that support for abortion rights would not be a "litmus test" for Democrats to support candidates in the House of Representatives midterm elections in 2018.

"It's a shocking sort of misunderstanding of actually where the country is . . . which is overwhelmingly supportive of abortion rights and also who are the ground troops that kind of fuel the election of candidates," Richards said.

Voters can separate their beliefs from their politics, Richards said.

"People can distinguish between their own personal feelings and what they believe government or politicians should do," Richards said. "And people even in some of the most conservative areas of the country who may themselves personally say, 'I would never choose to have an abortion,' or, 'That's not something that's right for me,' also absolutely do not believe politicians should be making decisions about pregnancy for women."

Her point, she said, is that debating on abortion rights is not in touch with voters in the U.S.

"Once you have a right for more than 40 years, people begin to assume that's actually established law," Richards told Politico, regarding Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision that declared abortion legal.

However, she said more conservative justices joining the Supreme Court could "absolutely" lead to the law being overturned.

Democrats remain steadfast in favor of abortion rights, according to the Democratic National Committee's CEO.

"It's written in our platform," Jess O'Connell told Politico.

"We're not going back to the days of being lukewarm on choice," Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., said Saturday.
