The majority of Americans think the U.S. shouldn't be threatening military action against North Korea, though most would support action if a diplomatic solution fails, CBS News reports.
When asked if the U.S. should threaten North Korea with military action:
- 33 percent said "should"
- 63 percent of Republicans agreed
- 11 percent of Democrats agreed
- 33 percent of independents agreed
- 59 percent said "should not"
- 30 percent of Republicans disagreed
- 82 percent of Democrats disagreed
- 58 percent of independents disagreed
When asked about approving of military action after diplomacy doesn't work:
- 58 percent approve
- 80 percent of Republicans agreed
- 43 percent of Democrats agreed
- 57 percent of independents agreed
- 34 percent disapprove
- 16 percent of Republicans disagreed
- 50 percent of Democrats disagreed
- 34 percent of independents disagreed
This poll also showed that Republicans are the only group confident in President Donald Trump's ability to handle the situation.
- 38 percent are confident Trump can handle it
- 77 percent of Republicans agree
- 6 percent of Democrats agreed
- 39 percent of independents agreed
- 59 percent disagree
- 22 percent of Republicans disagreed
- 90 percent of Democrats disagreed
- 57 percent of independents disagreed
CBS News conducted the poll from August 14-16, by phone, surveying 1,223 adults across the country, with a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
