Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-Texas, says the government's inability to reunite every child separated from their parents crossing into the U.S. illegally is an "astonishing failure."
Castro's remarks came in a Friday interview on CNN's "New Day" program.
"First, I'm astonished because the Trump administration told members of Congress directly – and really told the American people – that they knew where every parent and every child was located," he said.
"Now, they're basically outsourcing the task of finding some of these parents over to the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) and, perhaps, other groups. That to me is an astonishing failure by the Trump administration (and) by our federal government.
"No. 1, they lied to us. And second, they were so incredibly sloppy that they didn't keep track of the parents and the children."
CNN reported 572 children are still separated from their parents and are in U.S. government custody.
Asked if this was an admission that the U.S. government has simply lost track of those involved, Castro replied: "It pretty much is."
Trump's daughter, Ivanka, has called the family separations a "low point" for her his administration.
