Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson said Sunday what will help “the nation heal” following the gruesome death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police is “dialogue together.”
In an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Carson was hammered by host Jake Tapper over President Donald Trump’s retweet Friday of a video of Glenn Beck and Candace Owens claiming Floyd is being made a martyr.
“I know you didn’t retweet this, but the president did,” Tapper said. “Does that help the nation heal?”
“What will help the nation heal is if we will engage in dialogue together,” Carson replied.
“Let’s not make the solution be a Democrat solution or a Republican solution. Let’s make it be an American solution and recognize that our country is extraordinary.”
“No one from the outside can bring us down… but we can destroy ourselves,” he said, adding: “We the American people are not each other’s enemies,” urging people to “not be manipulated to hate each other and destroying ourselves.”
But Tapper pressed the Cabinet member.
“You’re calling for healing, you’re calling for understanding, you’re calling for people to listen to each other, and President Trump is retweeting a video in which people are attacking the character of [Floyd],” he said.
“Doesn’t it hurt the country, and this idea we need to have dialogues and conversations and respect each other, when the president is sharing and, in some cases, offering incendiary statements?”
Carson promised Trump would clarify the issue.
“I believe you’re going to be hearing from the president this week on this topic,” Carson said. “I would ask you to reserve judgment.”
