Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson on Sunday defended the Trump administration’s response to the coronavirus outbreak in the country, saying officials were working "very hard" to guide Americans.
In an interview on ABC News’ “This Week,” Carson, a former pediatric brain surgeon, said U.S. officials are advising people based on available evidence.
"You can look at worst case scenarios, you can look at best case scenarios, the thing that needs to be understood is that we are working very hard, looking at all of the evidence on a day-by-day basis making recommendations based on that,” he said.
“No question more people will be detected as we do more testing,” he said, but added: “We need to be working together, federal, state and local health officials and the medical professionals -- who are very good in this country, by the way -- and they're the ones who are making the determination about who needs to be tested.”
Carson said treatment of the COVID-19 is also clear-cut — and that the elderly and those with underlying medical conditions are at most risk.
“This virus like other viruses and should be treated the same way… certain segment of our society who are vulnerable,” he said. “So certain precautions should be taken. If we take those precautions we have much better ability to contain… the disease.”
