California's Democratic Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday said impeaching President Donald Trump would not help Democrats because they'd be left with Vice President Mike Pence as president, which would still present a "problem," The Hill reported Saturday.
Newsom told talk show host Bill Maher on HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher" that Democrats needed to find out the truth about claims of Russian collusion and the Trump campaign during the 2016 presidential election, but defended comments he made where he called the issue a "loser" for Democrats.
"Absolutely, unequivocally, we need to get to the bottom of this (Russia collusion). What I was saying is an important point is, if you game this thing out and you get rid of Trump, you're left with a problem and that's Mike Pence," Newsom explained.
Newsom said the "bigger point" was "the Democratic Party right now — we're in trouble."
