Two California men have been charged in a case involving the submission of more than 8,000 fraudulent voter applications on behalf of homeless people, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday.
Carlos Antonio De Bourbon Montenegro, 53, who is also known as Mark Anthony Gonsalves, and Marcos Raul Arevalo, 34, are both charged with one count of conspiracy to commit voter fraud, eight counts of voter fraud, four counts of procuring and offering a false or forged instrument and four misdemeanor counts of interference with a prompt transfer of a completed affidavit, the DA’s office said in a statement on its website.
Montenegro also has been charged with an additional 10 counts of voter fraud, seven counts of procuring and offering a false or forged instrument, two counts of perjury and five misdemeanor counts of interference with a prompt transfer of a completed affidavit.
Prosecutors claim Montenegro submitted more than 8,000 fraudulent voter registration applications between July and October and also falsified names, addresses and signatures on nomination papers to run for mayor in the Los Angeles suburb of Hawthorne.
Montenegro is facing a maximum sentence of 15 years and eight months in prison, while Arevalo could be sentenced to as long as seven years in prison if convicted.
