Field Poll: Slim 51% of Calif. Voters Back Same-Sex Marriage

A majority of California voters supports same-sex marriage, but the approval is hardly a ringing endorsement, at 51 percent.

And the Field Poll results released Tuesday, in which 42 percent disapproved, mirror those of two years ago, when voters responding to polls said they approved of the concept — and then voted to outlaw such marriages, according to a report at SFGate, the website of the San Francisco Chronicle.

In May 2008, 51 percent of those polled supported same-sex marriage, when lost in the voting booth six months later when voters approved Proposition 8, the report says.

Prop. 8 is back in the news now, as a federal judge is expected to rule this month on whether the ban is unconstitutional. Some expect the legal battle to reach the U.S. Supreme Court.

Marc Solomon, marriage director of Equality California, which works for legal protections for gay people, told the Chronicle that new poll is "great news" because it is an increase of the 49 percent approval last year.
