Business Groups Oppose Obama Contractor Order

By    |   Tuesday, 17 May 2011 02:29 PM EDT

President Barack Obama has lost the support of business on yet another issue. This one concerns a draft executive order that would make government contractors disclose their political contributions, The Hill reports.

In a letter sent to Obama Monday, groups including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the American Petroleum Institute, the National Retail Federation, and the National Association of Manufacturers expressed their objections. They say the rule would throw politics into the federal procurement process.

"The Executive has a statutory obligation to procure goods and services based on the best value for the American taxpayer,” the letter reads. “It also has constitutional obligations to respect the legislative domain of Congress, to refrain from chilling protected political speech, and to avoid subjecting citizens to arbitrary laws.”
