Former Vice President Joe Biden is urging the media to be mindful of the "conclusively debunked conspiracy theory" regarding his son's work in Ukraine as he observes the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump while campaigning for president.
Biden's campaign, according to National Review, sent a memo to the media that referenced his son Hunter's board position at a Ukrainian gas company while his father was vice president in the Obama administration. President Donald Trump and his allies have accused the Bidens of corruption because of Hunter's lucrative job with the company, Burisma.
Calling it a "malicious and conclusively debunked conspiracy theory" that a conflict of interest existed when Hunter was on the board, Biden's campaign said there's no evidence to back claims made by the right.
"It is not sufficient to say the allegations are 'unsubstantiated' or that 'no evidence has emerged to support them,'" reads the document. "Not only is there 'no evidence' for Republicans' main argument against the vice president — there is a mountain of evidence that actively debunks it. And it is malpractice to ignore that truth."
Trump's team denies the president did anything wrong by withholding military aid to Ukraine last summer, and it has accused the Bidens of misconduct because Joe Biden forced Ukraine to fire a prosecutor who had purportedly been looking into the Bidens' Ukraine ties.
Biden says nothing improper took place between his family and the Eastern European nation. His memo lists several news reports that present evidence of wrongdoing in the Trump White House when it comes to Ukraine.
"No political entity — not the Republican Party nor the Democratic Party, not the Biden campaign nor the Trump campaign — can ever be allowed to act as your editors," the memo reads. "But to fail to make clear that the conspiracy theory and false accusations about Joe Biden have been comprehensively disproven, to artificially prop-up these egregious lies based on the 'principle' that if partisans make accusations, they have to be treated as legitimate regardless of the facts, is to make you an enabler of misinformation.
"Now more than ever, the American people rely on the media to sort fact from fiction and truth from lies."
Trump was impeached in the House last month and is now on trial in the Senate.
