Former NFL star Burgess Owens Tuesday compared winning his election to represent Utah in the U.S. House of Representatives to preparing to play in Super Bowl XV.
"I remember sitting in Super Bowl XV in the locker room with the Raiders getting out to play the biggest game of my career thinking and looking around the room and seeing all-stars gathering," Owens told Fox News' "Fox & Friends." "I feel the same way now. We have a team that's remarkable. I can't wait for our country to recognize and see this game-changing team that we're putting together and I cannot believe I'm sitting with them at a time when our country needs these kinds of patriots."
Owens defeated incumbent Democrat Rep. Ben McAdams in a closely fought election, allowing Republicans to regain all four of the conservative state's congressional seats.
Owens said he had a "great conversation" with McAdams, who spoke about how much he appreciated the chance to serve the district and said he was looking forward to working with Owens on the transition.
"That's the way Americans should do it," said Owens. "We fight hard. We fight for our dreams. At the end of the day, it's all about the end game. The end game is making sure our country moves forward."
Owens said he thinks the United States is at a key point in history and there are "no more gray" areas.
"We have to fight toward freedom," said Owens. "Our country was built fighting against socialists and Marxists. My opponent didn't get any favors when you have the leadership of his party heading into leftism. Proud of the American people to give the opportunity to hold off this process."
He added that it's important that the GOP keeps control of the Senate, which will give the United States a "good two years."
Owens also commented on claims former President Barack Obama made in his new book when he said President Donald Trump was elected because people were uncomfortable seeing a Black man in the White house.
"President Trump's election is what our country is all about," said Owens. "We are a country of diverse people. One thing in common is we are proud to be Americans."
