Mounting a long-shot effort to defeat the confirmation of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, Senate Democrats ultimately hope to use his conservative views to fuel a "blue wave" in November, Politico reported.
According to the news outlet, Democrats preparing for confirmation hearings this week will zero in on his healthcare views — particularly on abortion rights, the social safety net, and Obamacare.
And if he will not commit to preserving those issues, Democrats hope to force Kavanaugh into validating that he would vote to wipe them out, which would prompt a public outcry, and perhaps, additional votes needed to sink the nominee, Politico reported.
"If Americans really knew what he intends to do to our republic, perhaps many more Americans would be speaking out against his nomination," Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., a Judiciary Committee member, told Politico.
But privately, Democrats know they are not likely to stop Kavanaugh and plan to use the battle to mobilize their base around threats to healthcare coverage and reproductive rights to build a blue wave, Politico reported.
"Women in this country should care very, very much about what's going to happen to their healthcare," Sen. Mazie Hirono D-Hawaii, told Politico.
