Thomas Bossert, who served as President Donald Trump’s first homeland security adviser, said European travel restrictions announced by the president as a way of fighting the coronavirus outbreak are a “poor use of time and energy.”
Bossert made his comments in a tweet posted Thursday morning.
He wrote: “There’s little value to European travel restrictions. Poor use of time & energy. Earlier, yes. Now, travel restrictions/screening are less useful. We have nearly as much disease here in the US as the countries in Europe. We MUST focus on layered community mitigation measures-Now!”
And in another tweet, he added: “In two weeks, we will regret wasting time and energy on travel restrictions and wish we focused more on hospital preparation and large scale community mitigation.”
Trump announced Wednesday night that he is cutting off travel from Europe to the U.S. The restrictions won’t apply to the United Kingdom, he said. And Trump noted there would be exemptions for “Americans who have undergone appropriate screenings.”
