Republicans who sought the impeachment of former President Bill Clinton are now in a precarious position, between rebuking Democratic impeachment attempts or defending President Donald Trump's actions, Watergate reporter Bob Woodward told The Spokesman-Review.

"I know Republican senators, and they are choking on this," Woodward, 76, whose reporting on Watergate led to former President Richard Nixon's impeachment, told Whitworth University's Presidential Leadership Forum, per the Spokane, Washington, paper.

Right now the money is coming in for the GOP in defense of another impeachment attempt, but ultimately Republicans are going to have to decide if President Trump's seeking of investigations of a potential political rival should be tolerated.

"Whether they say that's too much, I don't know," Woodward told the Spokesman-Review.

Woodward admits the latest attempts to impeach President Trump over requesting investigations of former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter's business dealings in Ukraine and China are not based on the law.

"No, it's probably not criminal, because no one ever thought to make a law about it," Woodward told the students to raucous laughter, per the Spokesman-Review.
