Gov. Bobby Jindal Calls 'Kissing Congressman' an 'Embarrassment'

Tuesday, 12 August 2014 09:16 AM EDT

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal called "kissing congressman" Vance McAllister an "embarrassment" and urged him to drop out of the election.

"Look, he originally made the right decision when he decided not to run for re-election," Jindal told CQ Roll Call during a visit to the Iowa State Fair over the weekend.

"I said he should have stepped down at the time. I think he's making a mistake, I think he should have stuck to his original decision and not go back inside to try to run again.

"I think it'd be better for him. He said he wanted some time for privacy and to spend that time with his family. I think that'd be a good thing for him to do. I think it's been an embarrassment to him, the district, and the state."

McAllister was captured on video kissing a married former staff member earlier this year. The Republican politician initially pulled out of the race, but then had a change of heart, with the support of his wife, Kelly.

Jindal, a possible GOP candidate for the White House in 2016, told Roll Call that his main concern during the next few months is to help Republican candidates get elected in House, Senate, and gubernatorial races.

But McAllister is not on that list. "I won't be endorsing him, if that's what you're about to ask," said Jindal during his visit to the early presidential voting state.

McAllister will be opposed in the November election by six challengers, including Republican Zach Dasher, a nephew of "Duck Dynasty" star Phil Robertson. Dasher was expecting his famous family to back his campaign, although McAllister received support from the Robertson clan during a special runoff election last year.

His Democratic challenger is Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo, who was narrowly beaten by McAllister in an open primary for the special election. McAllister went on to win the seat in November.
