Secretary of State Rex Tillerson conducted a press conference on Wednesday, but CBS News veteran Bob Schieffer said he was unsure that it was successful in tamping down reports of dissension between Tillerson and President Donald Trump.
"This was not like a news conference. It was more like a hostage tape," Schieffer said Thursday on "CBS This Morning."
The secretary of state will not be in that role much longer, according to Schieffer.
"The word is he'll be gone by Christmas… I don't know what happens, but I don't see how this helped much of anything," he said, referring to Tillerson's press conference.
"I can never remember a secretary of state calling a news conference to say he's loyal to the president.
"It's widely known in Washington that the president has simply lost confidence in him, and when that kind of word gets around, it's very hard to get your job done," he said.
Schieffer has criticized President Donald Trump and members of his administration before. "He's making fools of his own staff," he said back in May.
