Menendez Defiant in Video: 'I Will Never Give Up'

By    |   Thursday, 02 April 2015 04:40 PM EDT

Sen. Robert Menendez sent out a YouTube video Thursday in which he promises to wage a vigorous fight against corruption charges leveled by the Obama administration, Mediaite reported.

The video, in English and Spanish, was posted to a YouTube channel called "I Stand With Bob."

In it, the New Jersey Democrat insisted he did nothing wrong and touts the "unwavering support" he has received from across his home state and even across partisan lines.

Menendez discussed the investigation into his relationship with Florida eye doctor Salomon Melgen.

"It saddens me that our system of justice has already failed at its most basic level by leaking information and peddling rumors," he said.

But that failure, he added, "affords me the opportunity to finally show beyond a doubt that the charges leveled today and through a nearly three-year campaign of innuendo and smears are completely false. I will never give up, and I will never back down when the cause is just and the stakes are high."

In the video, Menendez said the charges would not affect his work as a senator, "from standing strong for our ally Israel to demanding the toughest sanctions against Iran to insisting on economic justice and fairness."

The Democratic Party leadership announced Thursday that Sen. Ben Cardin of Maryland would replace Menendez as the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
