Sen Bob Corker wrote a heartfelt letter to whomever wins the election this November to replace him as Tennessee senator, explaining his views on public service and how best to work for the community.
He wrote the letter after the Tennessean asked him to do so.
Corker said his entrance into public service began not as a political endeavor but a civic one when, as the owner of a construction business, he saw a notice for help on his church bulletin board and found that "working with people in need touched me in ways you cannot imagine."
He said it was crucial, when winning a public office, not to imagine staying there for too many terms, writing that "when you approach public service that way and are willing to walk away from 'power' it allows you to serve in a different capacity.
"It allows you to get your uniform dirty on every play and to call 'em how you see 'em. It allows you to think big and tackle major issues without thinking about the next election. And it allows you to focus on what unites rather than what divides."
Corker stressed that after nearly 12 years in the Senate, he has found that "in our form of government, the only way to do that successfully is by working with members on both sides of the aisle."
He ended the letter by assuring whoever won the election: "I will be cheering you on each step along the way."
