Bob Barr to Seek Return to Congress

Thursday, 14 March 2013 03:02 PM EDT

Former Rep. Bob Barr who ran for president as a Libertarian in 2008, will make a return bid for the House as a Republican, according to a Georgia political website.

PeachPundit says Barr told a group of Georgia Republicans Wednesday that he will run in the state’s 11th District. The district in Atlanta’s northern suburbs is now represented by Republican Phil Gingrey, who is expected to run next year for the Senate seat being vacated by Saxby Chambliss.

Barr, 64, entered Congress in 1995 and served four terms. But his seat was dismantled under redistricting and he lost a GOP primary in 2002 to fellow incumbent John Linder. He gained national attention as one of the leaders of the impeachment movement against President Bill Clinton.

He then left the Republican Party and became an independent before joining the Libertarian Party. He returned to the GOP in2011 and briefly considered challenging Republican Rep. Tom Graves last year.

Barr was “unambiguous” in his message that he’s running again and has already talked to the House Republican leadership about his seniority status should he win, PeachPundit reports.
