Democrats are underperforming with African-American voters, according to a poll released by the political action committee BlackPAC, reports Politico.
More than one-third of the 804 black voters surveyed expressed desire for “someone else” to run, though 70 percent said they would vote for the Democrat who wins.
“Black voters are extremely anxious right now about what’s happening in the country,” Adrianne Shropshire, executive director of BlackPAC, told Politico in reference to the large number of participants who expressed dissatisfaction with the economy and the direction of the country.
“It matters not the age category or people that live in rural or suburban communities. People are paying attention at a really high rate.”
The black turnout rate declined in 2016 for the first time in 20 years in a presidential election, falling to 59.6 percent after reaching a record-high 66.6 percent in 2012. This year, Sen. Bernie Sanders has the best chance of beating President Donald Trump, with 34 percent of likely Democratic voters saying the Vermont lawmaker is the best to face Trump.
But more than half of those surveyed by BlackPAC feel that the Democratic Party is not paying attention to the black community.
“This happens every election cycle. We hear from black voters a concern about whether Democrats are taking their votes for granted,” Shropshire explained. “And we also know that the vast majority of African-Americans will vote Democrat. And it’s because people are making a political calculation about what’s in the best interest of the community and what’s in the best interest of the country.”
