An overwhelming majority of Black Americans say they would choose former Vice President Joe Biden for president over Donald Trump if the election were held today, according to a new poll.
A Washington Post-Ipsos poll released Thursday shows that racism and police conduct are the most important issues for Black Americans when selecting the next president.
Poll results show:
- 92% of Black Americans say they back Biden for president.
- 50% of Black Americans say Biden should select a Black, female running mate.
- 9% of Black Americans approve of the job Trump is doing in office.
- 90% of Black Americans say they disapprove of Trump’s response to the death of George Floyd, a black man, who was killed by a white former police officer last month.
- 87% of Black Americans say they believe Trump is biased against Black people compared to 17% of Black Americans who feel Biden is biased against Black people.
Nearly 3 in 4 Black Americans say they are “absolutely certain to vote,” according to the poll. Black Americans under 40 are less motivated to hit the polls with 61% saying they will vote.
When choosing who to support for president, at least 9 in 10 Black Americans say racism and police treatment of Black Americans will be determining factors.
The poll surveyed 1,153 non-Hispanic Black adults including 989 Black registered voters between June 9-14. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
