Former United Nations Ambassador Bill Richardson said Thursday he was "flabbergasted, speechless in a positive way" about President Donald Trump's agreement to meet with North Korea by May but warned dictator Kim Jong Un "wants something in return."
"They have an end game," Richardson, New Mexico's former Democratic governor who served in the Clinton White House, told Anderson Cooper on CNN. "We've underestimated Kim Jong Un.
"Everyone said he was a bomb-thrower, unpredictable.
"The big lesson here is Kim Jong Un has not delivered," Richardson added. "He's not delivered on anything.
"He's talking good."
Regardless, "we should take advantage of this," he said.
"The president should've accept this invitation, but we really have to be prepared.
"I don't think the North Koreans are going to denuclearize."
Looking broadly, Richardson said "any kind of agreement is going to take a long time with the North Koreans.
"It's not going to happen on a presidential visit.
"We have to know what we want to come out of the meeting, but it's not going to be all denuclearization."
