New York Mayor Bill de Blasio's Progressive Agenda Committee is spinning its wheels, unable to get a single presidential candidate to show up at a planned Iowa forum,
The New York Times reports.
The Dec. 6 forum on income inequality
was canceled, and the group said it would focus its energies in other directions.
The group's intent is to "rally liberal elites behind a cohesive message," the Times reports, but while it has several leaders who believe in its cause, many are reluctant to attach their names.
Austin, Texas Mayor Steve Adler liked the group's policy manifesto, but said in emails he feared the national issues could be divisive on the local stage.
De Blasio's involvement is being downplayed with his name left off invitations to the now-canceled event.
The group does maintain support. De Blasio adviser John Del Cecato said this week the Progressive Agenda Committee has helped move the public dialogue in a more liberal direction.
