With Florida too close to call as of 9:45 p.m. ET, President Donald Trump led by nearly 4% with 93% of the votes counted. Joe Biden’s campaign team issued a statement reassuring voters that, ''we didn’t have to win it, and that remains true.''
Newsmax has projected a Trump victory in the state.
''We said Florida was going to be close and … it is! We also said we didn’t have to win it, and that remains true,'' a Biden spokesman told Politico.
''We are encouraged by some of the gains, especially in suburbs, that could have national ramifications. We are also doing well in the non-Cuban Hispanic vote, which bodes well elsewhere. There are not places in other states that look like Miami-Dade. And, we have seen throughout this campaign that other Latino voters don’t vote like Cuban-Americans.''
Trump, who won Florida in 2016 by just over 1%, improved his raw vote total in Miami-Dade County by more than 100,000 votes. The Miami-Dade area includes much of Florida’s Cuban-American community, a demographic Trump has targeted heavily.
Florida, with 29 Electoral College votes, is critical for Trump to secure reelection.
