Joe Biden on Monday vowed to fight back against any foreign interference in the U.S. electoral process with "substantial and lasting costs on state perpetrators," including sanctions, asset freezes, cyber responses and the exposure of corruption.
“Foreign interference in the U.S. electoral process represents an assault on the American people and their constitutional right to vote,” Biden wrote in a statement Monday posted to Medium.
“When foreign states direct hackers, trolls, money launderers, and misinformation to subvert or cast doubt on our elections, they threaten America’s sovereignty, democratic institutions, and national security. They undermine the vote and the voice of every U.S. citizen. They attack our very way of life.”
Biden’s statement came after Democratic Party leaders issued a new warning that Congress appears to be the target of a foreign interference campaign and a few days after he said Russia and China were still engaged in attempts to delegitimatize the electoral process.
Biden in his statement also said he would direct agencies from across the federal government to “develop plans for disrupting foreign threats to our elections process ... so that we are isolating the regimes that seek to undermine democracies and civil liberties."
