Women's healthcare activists are looking for Joe Biden to roll back a large portion of President Donald Trump’s executive actions on abortion and women’s health.
The Hill is reporting that they want Biden to act quickly to reverse certain Trump rules. Those rules include banning the use of federal family planning dollars for domestic and foreign organizations that provide or promote abortions and allowing more employers to opt out of Obamacare’s contraception mandate.
“We think many of these issues actually could be addressed day one, in an executive order that explicitly talks about the new administration's commitment to sexual reproductive healthcare,” said Jacqueline Ayers, vice president of government relations and public policy for Planned Parenthood Action Fund.
While Biden is expected to take some action in his first days, he could be limited by the courts, where vacancies have been filled by Trump, The Hill noted.
One rule being targeted by activists prohibits Title X providers from promoting or performing abortions. The rule, finalized last year, appeared to be aimed at Planned Parenthood, one of the largest Title X providers.
“It’s our hope and expectation that very early in the new administration, there will be swift action to reverse the Trump era regulations and start to reset and address the harm that’s been done,” said Amy Moy, chief external affairs officer for Essential Access Health, the largest Title X grantee in the country.
Biden, a Catholic, has said he keeps his faith separate from his duties. In his 2007 book, “Promises to Keep,” he wrote that he is “personally opposed to abortion, but I don’t think I have a right to impose my view on the rest of society.
