A protective detail for Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos could cost up to $6.54 million over the next year, Education Department spokeswoman Liz Hill told Politico on Monday.
The agency does not plan to exceed that number in the 2018 fiscal year for the around-the-clock security, the spokeswoman said.
The Department of Education paid the U.S. Marshals Service $5.28 million for DeVos' security from February through September of this year, because both agencies were able to find savings, Hill said.
Savings came from DeVos, who pays for the marshals to fly with her on her own private plane. The education secretary pays bills for the plane, Politico reported.
The Department of Education's small security force protected the previous four education secretaries, Politico reported.
The U.S. Marshals Service cannot disclose the number of employees that are on DeVos' security detail because of the "nature of threats against the secretary," spokesman Drew Wade said.
