Despite his frequent criticism of President Donald Trump, Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., would not only sit down with adversaries, but he also would not resist using military force against them.
"Sure, absolutely, of course I do – hopefully as rare as possible – but we have the best military in the world," Sanders told "60 Minutes" in an interview airing Sunday evening.
Use of military force would not require a threat against Americans only either, Sanders told Anderson Cooper, adding it would come for threats against an ally, too.
"Threats against the American people to be sure, threats against our allies," Sanders said of his criteria for use of military force. "I believe in NATO. I believe that the United States – everything being equal – should be working with other countries in alliance, not doing it alone.
"We have got to make it clear to countries around the world, we will not sit by and allow invasions to take place, absolutely."
Sanders, who had ripped Trump for meeting with North Korea's Kim Jong Un and other dictators, now admits he would do the same.
"Yeah, I have criticized Trump for everything under the world, under the sun, but meeting with people who are antagonistic is, to me, not a bad thing to do," Sanders said. "I think, unfortunately, Trump went into that meeting unprepared. I think it was a photo opportunity, and did not have the kind of the diplomatic work necessary to make it a success.
"But I do not have a problem with sitting down with adversaries all over the world."
