An ally of Sen. Bernie Sanders posted a highly offensive tweet about Wednesday's deadly crash of a train filled with Republican members of Congress, quipping that it was the result of God "working hard" to "clean up the stink."
In a now-deleted tweet obtained by The Washington Free Beacon, former union leader Jonathan Tasini — whose Twitter bio identifies him as a "Bernie surrogate" and "CNN talking head," said:
"Wow, btwn train full of Goopers hitting truck and this, God is working hard today to clean up the stink. Thank her. #TreyGowdy #goptrainwreck"
After the post was widely condemned on social media, Tasini deleted it and followed up with a back-handed apology:
Tasini, who campaigned for Sanders during the 2016 election, followed the apology up with a second tweet, stating:
The train carrying Republican lawmakers on the way to a retreat hit a truck in Albemarle County, Virginia, killing one person and injuring several others. No member of Congress or their staff has been reported as critically hurt.
