Sen. Bernie Sanders said he likely won’t run for president again.
The Hill reports the Vermont senator said it is “very, very unlikely” he will take another run at the White House in 2024 on Monday.
His comments were made during a Washington Post Live event.
“I think the likelihood is very, very slim at that,” Sanders said. “I think next time around you’ll see another progressive carrying the banner.”
The independent first took a run at the top office in 2016. His progressive movement did not gain enough traction and the Democrat presidential nomination ultimately went to Hillary Clinton.
In 2020, he backed off his second run at office to support Biden after Super Tuesday.
Sanders also said he hopes Biden will look to the Congressional Progressive Caucus to staff key members of his Cabinet, if he’s elected.
“I hope very much that Joe will take a hard look at some of the leading progressives in this country … what you need to bring into the Cabinet is not only people who have the progressive ideology, but people who have the experience of interacting with working class people who understand that now is the time to tell the billionaire class and 1% that this economy is going to change,” Sanders said.
