Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., a former Democratic presidential candidate, questioned whether the Hillary Clinton campaign failed to act against Russian election interference in 2016.
Russians were not supporting Sanders, he said. "They were attacking Hillary Clinton's campaign using my supporters against them," Sanders said in an interview with Vermont Public Radio.
"The real question to be asked is what was the Clinton campaign (doing about the Russian interference)? They had more information about this than we did," he said.
The Vermont senator said in a statement that Russian involvement should be condemned. Russian interference is a "direct assault on the free democratic systems that stand in contrast to the autocratic, nationalistic kleptocracy of Vladimir Putin and his backers in the Russian oligarchy," he said, Politico reported.
Sanders said Wednesday that no candidate should have to deal with Russian interference.
"No candidate, whether Secretary Clinton or anyone else, should have to wage an electoral contest in the face of foreign government intervention," Sanders said in a statement, The Hill reported.
