Sen. Moreno's Bill Would Ban Foreign Flags at Capitol

Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, has introduced legislation to prohibit the display of foreign flags on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol, Breitbart reported on Wednesday.

The Allegiance Act would make it illegal for members of Congress to use government funds to buy other nations' flags and bans the display of any colors other than the U.S. flag.

Moreno, who came legally to the U.S. from Colombia, built a successful chain of luxury car dealerships in Ohio prior to running for Senate.

"When I came to this country as a child, I swore allegiance to America and America alone, which is why it's so deeply offensive to me to see elected officials flying the flags of foreign nations like Ukraine in the halls of Congress," Moreno said.

"We swore an oath to the American people we would always put them first. Let's start acting like it and stop sending billions overseas on endless wars when average Americans are struggling."

In December 2022, then-Vice President Kamala Harris and former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi held up a signed Ukrainian flag when President Volodymyr Zelenskyy attended a joint session of Congress. The flag was flown over the Capitol during his visit and then was given to Zelenskyy by Pelosi.

Prior to President Donald Trump's address to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday, Moreno handed out American flags to every Republican in attendance.

"The idea is very simple. I came to this country from somewhere else," he said.

"I became a naturalized citizen ... and I think the idea that we have Democrats who bring the flag of other counties into that chamber is a disgrace."

Moreno's bill is similar to one introduced almost a year ago by Rep. Kat Cammack, R-Fla., in response to lawmakers waving the Ukrainian flag in the Capitol.

"It is despicable that sitting Members of Congress would fly the flag of a foreign nation on the House Floor, which is why I am proud to support Rep. Cammack's resolution protecting the integrity of the People's House by ensuring that the only flag flown within the Halls of Congress is the American flag," Rep. Brad Finstad, R-Minn., said in a statement.
