Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., has blasted his colleagues in Congress who are planning on objecting to the certification of the Electoral College vote in an attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.

"The president and his allies are playing with fire," Sasse wrote on Facebook on Wednesday night. "If you make big claims, you had better have the evidence. But the president doesn't and neither do the institutional arsonist members of Congress who will object to the Electoral College vote."

The senator made the post the same day that Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., said that he plans to object when Congress meets to certify the results on Jan. 6, which will force a vote but is unlikely to impact the result.

"Let's be clear what is happening here: We have a bunch of ambitious politicians who think there's a quick way to tap into the president's populist base without doing any real, long-term damage. But they're wrong — and this issue is bigger than anyone's personal ambitions," Sasse wrote. "Adults don't point a loaded gun at the heart of legitimate self-government."

He added, "When we talk in private, I haven't heard a single congressional Republican allege that the election results were fraudulent — not one. Instead, I hear them talk about their worries about how they will 'look' to President [Donald] Trump's most ardent supporters."
