Dr. Ben Carson on Monday said he expects Donald Trump to have a better showing in the second presidential debate, but warned that he can't follow "bankrupt" Hillary Clinton down the "rat-hole."
Carson, Monday's guest on the Fox News show "Outnumbered," said it's vital that Trump win on policy.
"What is essential he doesn't follow Hillary down the rat-hole," Carson said. "That is only way she can win. She is completely bankrupt when it comes to ideals on taxes, on regulations, on education, or prison reform or on how to revive the economy, on jobs."
However, Carson does think that Trump should bring up Bill Clinton's past infidelities but in the context of Hillary's reactions to them.
"It needs to be brought up, but in terms of Hillary, not so much Bill's infidelity as it is the fact that she savaged the women who were involved and claims to be this great champion of women," Carson said.
Carson said he believes Trump can set own trap for Hillary in next week's debate over what is sure to be a hot topic — The New York Times story on his tax returns.
"I think what Donald should ask Hillary in the next debate is, 'Do you hire accountants to do your taxes to make sure you don't pay more than you have to? I would love to hear the response because if she says, yes, then he says, you're doing exactly the same thing that I and millions of Americans are doing. If she says no, then he says, 'And you want us to put you in charge of everything?" Carson said.
Carson also took to task The New York Times for its reporting and publication of Trump's tax return.
"Unfortunately the Times and many other news organizations really have no sense of integrity," Carson said.
"The reason that the press is the only business that is protected by the United States Constitution is because they're supposed to be honest and they're supposed to be on the side of the people. … But when they take sides like The New York Times does, they completely distort the original intent. That is part of the reason why that we're in so much trouble and that is part of the reason that few people have confidence in the media anymore."
