As Democrats plan to unveil a new economic agenda, Rep. Barbara Lee told CNN on Monday that "what's important is our agenda and what we do to make sure that people throughout the country… know that we are fighting for them for economic security."
Lee, a Democrat from California who serves on the House Appropriations Committee, emphasized the inclusiveness of the plan, called "A Better Deal."
"Our communications team met with the majority of the members of our Democratic caucus, and we're a very diverse caucus, and got input into this agenda," and what they found was that "People really want to look at where Democrats stand in terms of economic security, in terms of good-paying jobs, in terms of healthcare," Lee said.
She added that "This message was discussed so that we could make sure that we could talk about what we stand for in all of our districts."
When asked if she thought Democrats have lost touch with their tradition of having the support of working-class voters, Lee disagreed but did say her party could do a better job of explaining that message to voters.
"That may be because of headline, sound bites," Lee said. "It may be because we haven't done a good enough job in really communicating our message and what we stand for, and who we are, and what we've done, and what we continue to do. And that's why we're rolling this [economic plan] out today."
Lee stressed that her experience as a member of the House Appropriations Committee has shown to her that "it is very clear that the Republicans stand for millionaires and billionaires" due to the GOP's plans to cut programs that help those well-off, while giving the rich tax breaks.
