Bachmann to Obama: Keep Ahmadinejad Out of Country

By    |   Tuesday, 20 September 2011 03:24 PM EDT

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who has called for the destruction of Israel among other inflammatory actions, doesn’t deserve the privilege of entering the United States as planned for the United Nations meeting this week, says Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann, The Hill reports.

“By his own words, Ahmadinejad has shown himself to be an enemy not only of Israel but also of the United States," the Minnesota congresswoman said. "He is, in the most literal sense, an outlaw and he should not be allowed in the United States. I call upon President Obama to stop Ahmadinejad from coming to the UN."

There’s a problem with that idea, though. If Obama blocked Ahmadinejad's visit, he would violate the United Nations Headquarters Agreement, which the United States signed in 1947. In exchange for having the U.N. headquarters in New York, the United States agreed not to prevent member countries’ officials from traveling to the U.N.
