Attorney General Jeff Sessions told lawmakers Tuesday he uses a pseudonym for email purposes and defended his predecessor's use of the same setup.
Sessions answered questions on a variety of topics in front of the House Judiciary Committee. Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., asked if Sessions would recuse himself from a Department of Justice probe looking at former Attorney General Loretta Lynch's use of the pseudonym "Elizabeth Carlisle."
"I would say in defense of Attorney General Lynch, I have a pseudonym also," Sessions said. "I understand all Cabinet officials do, and maybe some sub-Cabinet officials do. She would probably have been following the advice of the Department of Justice."
It was discovered Lynch used the fake name after she secretly met with former President Bill Clinton on the tarmac of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in summer of 2016. Lynch's predecessor Eric Holder, who left the office in 2015, also used a pseudonym for email.
