The sign language interpreter at Monday’s White House press briefing has ties to the far right, reports Time Magazine.
Heather Mewshaw runs a pro-Trump Facebook group and appears in right-wing videos spreading election claims wearing a MAGA hat. The group, Hands of Liberty, had been called Right Side ASL before it was deleted by Facebook in November.
Mewshaw has also signed in videos that include vaccine misinformation and claims about the U.S. Capitol riots.
One video she signs in is titled: “WHAT REALLY HAPPENED On January 6th?” Another is titled, “Joe Biden is literally and legally not the President elect.”
In a Jan. 20 video titled “Thank You President Trump From the Right Side ASL Team!” Mewshaw – in a MAGA hat – signs to Trump dancing to YMCA.
The Hands of Liberty group was deleted from Facebook after Time contacted the page for comment.
Before the page was taken down, a disclaimer read: “This isn't our original video. Hands of Liberty provides, upon request, ASL interpreting accommodations to the Deaf community for inaccessible online video content. This service is provided by volunteers.”
A petition to have Mewshaw removed from “ASL Interpreting for the White House,” has reached close to 1,1000 signatures at the time of writing.
