Republican Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson beat back a primary challenge in the early going Tuesday — a day after President Donald Trump endorsed his quest for a second term.
Despite slightly more than 10 percent of the vote counted, The Associated Press and several other news organizations called the race for Hutchinson over Jan Morgan, 71 percent to 29 percent.
Hutchinson pulled out early and remained ahead.
Trump tweeted his support for the governor Monday:
In the Democratic primary, newcomer and former state Teach for America director Jared Henderson defeated another political novice, former railroad employee Leticia Sanders, 64 to 36 percent, with nearly 50 percent of the vote counted.
Hutchinson and Henderson will square off in November.
