Obama Met Privately with Republicans on Debt

Monday, 18 July 2011 01:18 PM EDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama met privately Sunday with the Republican leaders of the House of Representatives on the U.S. debt crisis but made no progress on a breakthrough, a Republican congressional aide said.

"As we said throughout the weekend, the lines of communications are being kept open, but there is nothing to report in terms of an agreement or progress," said Brendan Buck, spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner. Boehner deputy Eric Cantor was also at the meeting.

Referring to Republican legislation to be voted on this week, Buck said: "We believe cut, cap and balance represents the best path forward, and we are looking forward to the House vote on it tomorrow." (Reporting by Steve Holland and Jeff Mason, Editing by Sandra Maler)
