Arthur Jones, a Republican congressional candidate who denies the Holocaust happened, on Sunday challenged his write-in opponent Justin Hanson to a debate on Hanson’s front lawn, the Chicago Tribune reports.
“You want to debate the Holocaust, I’ll debate the Holocaust,” Jones reportedly yelled while wearing a baseball hat with an American flag patch on it.
“You don’t deserve to wear that hat,” Hanson, also a Republican, told him before going into his backyard with his supporters for his official announcement for candidacy. Hanson, who has described Jones as an “avowed Nazi who supports vile policies,” told the Tribune he knew Jones was planning to disrupt his event and that he had contacted police beforehand.
On Sunday, he described his campaign as a small and scrappy effort and said his candidacy is “just about giving everyone a better option.”
Jones received more than 20,000 votes when he ran unopposed on the Republican primary ballot in March. He calls the Holocaust "the biggest, blackest lie in history," and says he's a former leader of the American Nazi Party and now leads a group open to "any white American citizen of European, non-Jewish descent."
