Newly elected Arkansas Republican Rep. Tom Cotton has heard from a lot of constituents about the gun control proposals being discussed in Washington and an overwhelming majority of them aren’t interested in more laws, he said.
If he’d been in office already, Cotton also said he would have voted against all the proposals to avoid the fiscal cliff and plans to vote against increasing the debt ceiling, he said in an interview with
Politico.
Cotton said he has heard from many of his constituents since the school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., and while some favor stronger gun laws, the vast majority that he has spoken to don’t think more control is necessary.
“It’s running nine-to-one against further gun controls,” Cotton said, continuing that “it’s running in favor of things like addressing mental health issues or adding armed guards at schools.”
Regarding the country’s budgetary problems, he said that he would have voted against both Speaker of the House John Boehner’s “Plan B” proposal and the tax deal that kept most rates from increasing on New Year’s Day.
Cotton said he plans to vote against any increase in the debt ceiling because he is more concerned about the effects of continuing to rack up bills than he is about any market correction tied to the U.S. defaulting on its debt.
“I’d like to take the medicine now,” he said.
